| I'm originally from
Montgomery, in Fayette County, West Virginia. The majority of my
relative's lives centered around the coal mines for employment, living
up this or that holler where the mine was at the head. They worked and
played with a sense of determination and like other West Virginians' are
a strong, independent, proud, and friendly people.
The mountains that surround
us provide a sense of security from the craziness of the "outside
world". I heard a young woman say that living in these mountains "is
like being cradled in your mother's arms". The people that live here
know that connection to the mountains, it gives them strength, it's
unlike any other place. It's a cultural jewel that continues to be
"discovered" by others. There is still to be found a simplicity in
living, a wealth in keeping and collecting "stuff" for future use rather
than discarding, still a connection to family, identity by county, a
dedication to high school football teams and Wednesday night church, and
sitting on the porch watching the world wander by. This is my home. |
